Gastric Bypass Procedure

Gastric bypass, a surgical procedure used to treat obesity, has a long treatment process, including before and after surgery. The surgery, which alters the digestive system, takes 2-4 hours. The patient is anaesthetized and the upper part of the stomach is separated and a small stomach pouch is created.

The small intestine is connected to this pouch and the operation is complete. Patients usually lose 50-70% of their excess weight in the first 1-2 years.

Preparation

Before the operation, a physical examination, blood tests and other analyses are carried out to determine whether the patient is a suitable candidate for the treatment.

General anesthesia is performed before the operation so that the patient does not feel pain. Usually, the operation is performed laparoscopically.

The surgery is performed through small incisions and a camera. In cases where open surgery is performed, large incisions are made.

During the operation, the surgeon creates a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach. This pouch is sized to hold a limited amount of food. The rest of the stomach remains attached to the small intestine.

The small intestine is cut in half and the lower part of the intestine is connected to the small pouch. The upper part of the small intestine is reconnected further downwards to allow the digestive juices to mix with the food.

The incisions in the abdomen are closed using sutures or staples and the surgical area is covered with sterile bandages.

After the operation, the patient will be kept in the hospital for a few days to check for any complications.

During the recovery period, the patient should follow the recommended diet and take the prescribed amount of vitamins. The patient should have regular check-ups.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)

It is the most commonly used gastric bypass technique. A small pouch is formed from the upper part of the stomach and the small intestine bypasses the rest of the stomach and is connected to the small pouch.

Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB)

Mini gastric bypass, also known as single anastomosis gastric bypass, creates a long and narrow tube from the stomach and connects it directly to the middle part of the small intestine.

Thus, food bypasses the rest of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine.
