Gastric Balloon Procedure

The gastric balloon procedure involves several steps, including before and after treatment. Unlike other gastric surgeries, gastric ballooning does not require surgery. The procedure is performed by putting the patient to sleep and inserting a balloon through the mouth into the stomach.

After the intragastric balloon procedure, the patient should take good care of themselves and keep the balloon in their stomach for a period of time. At the end of the procedure, the balloon is removed from the patient’s stomach and the desired result is achieved.

Pre-Procedure Preparation

Before treatment begins, the patient’s medical history is taken and the tests required for treatment are carried out.

After the tests have been carried out, a specialist dietician will determine the type of diet to be followed after surgery.  The patient is told not to take any food, water or medication for 12 hours before the treatment.

The patient is anaesthetised during the procedure. This ensures that the patient does not feel any pain.

After the patient has been anaesthetised, an endoscope with a camera is inserted through the mouth and the doctor examines the structure of the patient’s stomach. The deflated balloon is inserted into the patient’s stomach using an endoscopy device.

After the balloon is inserted, it is inflated for 30 minutes with a filling tube filled full of gas or saline.

After inflation, the tube is removed and the balloon floats freely in the stomach.

After the balloon is placed in the stomach and the procedure is completed, the patient is examined for a few days and monitored for any complications.

The patient should stick to the diet programme given by the dietician in the post-treatment period and should eat as recommended.

After the gastric balloon has been in the patient’s stomach for 6 months, it is removed from the patient’s stomach within 20 minutes in a similar process to the insertion phase. The patient is monitored briefly after the removal and provided with instructions for recovery.
